The 7 Secrets of RSS and SEO – SEMpdx Event Recap
Paul Colligan presented seven secrets of RSS and SEO at the May 8th SEMpdx event held at The Portland EcoTrust Building. It was an informative evening about the positive ways search engine marketers can use RSS to benefit SEO. Here are some key takeaways Amplify gleaned from Paul’s presentation:
- RSS helps improve the ISYOT effect (ISYOT stands for “I’ve seen you out there”). Obviously, becoming an established knowledge leader in a given category gives you credibility & trust… but how do you go about gaining the exposure that fuels this ISYOT effect? Give the audience an easy way to access your information! The solution is RSS – there’s no easier way to “syndicate” your content. Let an individual add your feed to their RSS aggregator. Which takes us to the next key takeaway:
- Options, options, options. There are many RSS aggregators out there – give individuals the option to include your feed in whatever RSS aggregator they want. You might know that someone can add any RSS feed to any aggregator out there, but that doesn’t mean your audience knows. Give them an easy way to subscribe to your content by whatever means they choose.
- Write engaging blog entry titles. This is especially important if there are already subscribers to your feed. When your feed populates on an individual’s RSS aggregator, the information that shows up is the title and opening 70 characters or so (depending on whatever option the user set). Make your blog title pop, give it some hook or catch, make it compelling!
Ultimately, just like all other things Web it’s your content that will drive your ability to succeed. Leveraging technologies like RSS is simply a way to get it out there.
