Perhaps, I myself used longer search terms rather than just 2-word. I do that to avoid unrelated searche results.

Definately getting smarter. I know people who type a normal 2 word search string, get bad (mostly niche marketed) results and add another word to the string.

This process goes on until they have narrowed down the result enough to feel comfortable that all they have left are no-nonsense results.

And these aren’t regular computer users I’m talking about either…

I think users definately getting smarter and I think part of it is because search engines are not returning relevant searches for one word searches .

If one word searches was returning relavant results users would not be using long tail search queries.

I always use the search assist feature and find that it is very helpful. But yes I do believe many are that users are getting smarter and more savvy when it comes to search.

Occasionally I use the search assist feature, but most of the time I type specific (longer) search queries to get more relevant results. It only takes a few extra seconds to type in a couple of extra words that will focus results and save me extra time because I don’t have to filter through the more generalized results.

I blogged about it earlier today and basically tied it to consumers being smarter…

But you guys make a really good point, the “search assist” definitely factors into it.
